Abstract

Obesity is currently considered as global epidemic, which unfortunately demonstrate constant increase in recent years. Obesity is a complex problem influenced by environmental and genetic factors. It is associated with an increase number of cardiovascular cases and degenerative diseases of the joints, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea and some types of cancer. Currently, in Poland obesity among children is a big problem, which is associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes in increasingly younger people. Interesting aspect in treating obesity seems herbs. The ideal herbal product against obesity should be: more statistically effective in comparison to placebo group, should improve biological markers (such as lipid profile and glycemia) with no side – effects and toxic effects. It should also be remembered that plants are source of various biologically active compounds, which exhibit a wide spectrum of activity. Fenugreek seeds can be a good example. They act against obesity due to the changing of lipid profile and glycemia, but it increases the appetite. It seems that fenugreek seeds should not be dedicated to obese people. This article describes some herbal substances, which can be used as a support in the weight loss process. However, further research concerning the safety of long-term use is required, particularly with concomitant use of a low-caloric diet and physical activity.
