Abstract
The World Reference Base (WRB) is an international soil classification system that evolved from the FAO–UNESCO Legend of the Soil Map of the World. It is intended to name both natural and human-made soils within the first two meters of the Earth's terrestrial surface. Soils are classified by diagnostic features, as in all modern classification systems. The WRB uses two hierarchical levels only: 32 Reference Soil Groups (RSGs) at the first level and an undetermined number at the second level as soils are named by combining the RSG with qualifiers. The WRB is continuously being tested and updated, with the latest edition presented in 2022 at the 22nd World Congress of Soil Science in Glasgow.
