Abstract

This contribution is about the role of laboratories and workshops in the development of independent films (especially documentaries) in North American film festivals. These small, invited gatherings within the larger cultures of film festivals influence the development of the next generation of films to screen in the festivals. The author is interested in the relations between festival lab and festival proper, and is interested to consider laboratories that exist outside of the film festival universe (for example, Firelight Media in Harlem NYC). These off-festival development cohorts may provide more opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers and stories. The author wants to consider the impact of these labs and workshops on the formal and political possibilities of documentary film. In addition to Firelight Media’s Documentary Lab, he considers Sundance Film Festival’s Documentary Lab and Full Frame Film Festival’s Garret Scott Documentary Grant.
