Abstract

I am a woman anthropologist employed as curator of primates by the San Diego Zoological Society. As a physical anthropologist with an M. A. degree focusing on primate taxonomy, ecology and behavior, my position provides an ideal arena in which to apply my academic training. I am primarily responsible for the creation and implementation of the collection and management plan for the zoo's primates. This plan should represent the range of diversity found in nature within the order primates, from prosimians through great apes. At the same time, the collection must recognize the zoological society's commitment to long-range captive reproduction of certain species (usually endangered). A major part of my job is to exhibit and maintain the primate species in numbers, group composition and environments closely duplicating the natural state in order to enhance reproduction. I also oversee the acquisition of animals, their sale or trade, and make arrangements for breeding loans.
