Abstract

This chapter provides readers an introduction to a few of the major theories of Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze, with attention to how these theories are being applied to research about early childhood education. The author begins with an example of a child at play drawn from her research with Kevin Leander (Boldt & Leander, 2017). She then provides a brief biographical sketch of the two philosophers and a discussion of some of their important theoretical concepts related to early childhood, which is used to analyze the episode of the child playing. The chapter concludes with a consideration of how three researchers—Liane Mozère, Liselott Mariett Olsson, and Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw—have used Deleuze and Guattari’s theories to think about practices in early childhood research and education. Key Words: Deleuze, Guattari, social organization, affordances, emergence, territorialization, assemblage, desire, affirmative politics, capitalism, schizoanalysis
