Abstract

The numbers of visually impaired elderly people are steadily increasing. To work effectively with this population, workers in the field of geriatrics need to develop a factual understanding of blindness. This article examines the prevalence of blindness in the later years of life, reviews the literature on aging and blindness, and describes a recent survey of older Nebraskans who have experienced significant vision loss. Concepts about blindness are discussed and specific suggestions for practical application are given.
