Abstract

A light probe about 50μ in diameter was scanned across the surface of sprayed barium oxide cathodes. Variations in the work function of the cathode were reflected in variations in the photocurrent from the illuminated area. The results suggest that the photoelectric work function may vary by up to 0·l5ev across the cathode surface; major emitting areas were found to be separated by a few tenths of a millimetre.
