Abstract
Occupational accidents often occur due to the workers’ self-awareness. The study was conducted at the Production System Laboratory, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Types of potential hazards that may occur in Production System Laboratory, including ergonomics, mechanical, slipping, and biological hazards, were analyzed by using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC) method and the improvement using the 5S method. From the result of the basic risk assessment calculation, it can be concluded that the risk with category of three priorities is 1 risk (7%), the substantial category is 0 risk (0%), the priority category 1 is 10 risk (76%) and the very high category is 2 risk (17%). From the result, there are two risk (15%) of three priorities, two risks of substantial categories (15%), seven risks of priority 1 category (55%) and two risks of very high category (15%). From the calculation, there is an average risk reduction of 17,15%. It can be concluded that risk reduction is still in the small category, hence the 5S implementation is necessary to be applied such as training and continuous implementation.
