Abstract

Within 24 hours after our arrival in Peking, all of us became aware of the primacy of the socialist work ethic in China's developmental effort. The message came via the loudspeakers on the street corner, the signs on the primary-school playground, and our observations of the students' production time in their first grade classes. The impact was clear. One's attitude towards work and his or her specific contributions to group projects was regarded as a key indicator of the individual's loyalty and patriotism.
