Abstract

ABSTRACTThe blog North East Women in Music (NEWM) was founded in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2017 and featured emerging women musicians. Employing critical discourse analysis, I analyzed all fifteen articles on the blog. My study suggests that NEWM took important steps in challenging stereotypes about women musicians in the North-East underground music scene by reclaiming femininity and redefining gender constructions. Using a modest sample, this article represents a preliminary study whose conclusions suggest the need for further investigation. The findings have implications for future research on how feminist media producers challenge depictions of women musicians in British rock music discourse.
