Abstract
ABSTRACT This research note is dedicated to the development of Soviet military gynecology, a new field of military medicine in the Red Army during the Second World War. After briefly outlining the deployment of women in the Russian and Soviet armed forces, it examines the question of why the deployment of numerous female Red Army soldiers on the fronts led to the development of a special healthcare approach for these soldiers. This research note also shows that Colonel Prof. Joseph F. Zhordania, as the first chief gynecologist of the Red Army, played a key role in the formation of this new discipline of Soviet military medicine. In addition, some problems and consequences are described that arose from the medical care of the female personnel of the Red Army.
