Abstract

The perception that there are insufficient pediatric subspecialists is of concern to pediatricians and the general population alike. Fortunately, the number of pediatric subspecialty trainees is increasing (personal communication, James A. Stockman III, 2003). In 1998-1999, the number of third-year (PL-6) trainees in the 13 subspecialties for which the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) offers Certificates of Special Qualification was 583; in 2002-2003, the number had increased by 20% to 698. The trend may be accelerating. The number of first year (PL-4) trainees in 2002-2003 is 982, a 44% increase from 1998-1999.
