Abstract

Equipment are the integral part of construction industry and plays vital role in performance of construction works, so the research aims to analyze the operational maintenance of actively utilized road construction equipment of “A” class construction company in Kathmandu, Nepal. The study considers 50 Numbers. of operators for questionnaire and 5 Key Informant Interview from each company for reckoning the Equipment Availability, Equipment Utilization Scheduled Compliance, Maintenance Ratio, Mean Time Between Failure, Reliability, Maintainability. The equipment utilization trend of companies had been increased within optimum utilization. The equipments seem very old crossing their economic life span. The maintenance strategy adopted was breakdown type. Scheduling of equipment operation was affected by instant breakdown of equipments due to lack of backup equipments at workshop and operators shortages. Equipment needs maintenance after utilization of 94 h less than standard practice of 100 h. Average equipment availability is 0.91 against standard of minimum 0.95. Major cause of delay in maintenance of equipments was the delay in receiving spare parts of breakdown of the equipments. Routine spare parts like filters, belts, nut bolts, teeth, cutting edge are easily available while for the sophisticated and typical spare parts need to be imported normally takes 15 to 30 days to deliver. The improper management of the equipment shows cause of unreliability of equipment.
