Abstract

The effect of charging-discharging on the thermal runaway of an 18650 lithium-ion battery was studied using a lithium-ion battery temperature testing system. The simultaneous effect of heating power and charging-discharging was also investigated. The average increase rate of the battery temperature increases with an increasing charging current when the battery is charging. Thermal runaway does not appear when the charging current is less than 9.8 A. The maximum temperature of the battery increases with an increasing charging current. Compared with battery temperature with 0.1 Ω resistance discharging, the temperature curve of the short-circuited battery is generally between the temperature curves of battery under 0.3 Ω and 1.5 Ω resistance discharging. The maximum temperature of the battery increases with a decreasing discharge resistance. Thermal runaway does not occur at the electric heating power of 20 W and when the SOC (State of Charge) is 0%. However, thermal runaway occurs in the charging condition when the SOC is 0%. At this time, the heating rate is the slowest. Thermal runaway does not occur under the discharge condition when the SOC is 100%. However, it does occur under the charging condition.
