Abstract

The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry has, in the space of a decade, developed into a major renewable energy business. Although solar energy is a dilute form of energy, it can be successfully and economically harnessed to make electricity. This chapter illustrates the rise of solar PV form an expensive but interesting form of renewable energy to one a relatively inexpensive one, which has become one of the most important renewable energy sources today, and one that can help us to manage global warming. Its growth throughout the world bodes well for its future; and if this growth continues then it will soon surpass wind energy and hydropower and become the most important of all renewable energy sources.
