Abstract

<p>Even though open-section girders have been widely used in long-span cable-stayed bridges, their bluff shape and lower torsion stiffness generally lead to poor aerodynamic performance compared with more streamlined box girders. Based on a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 400m, the flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance of the open-section girder were investigated and evaluated, and different kinds of aerodynamic control measures were proposed to suppress VIV of the blunt open-section girder. The emphasis was put on the effectiveness of each measure on VIV mitigation, including wind fairings, apron boards, horizontal guide plates, vertical stabilizers, and airflow-depressing boards. Moreover, the influence of each VIV suppression-oriented aerodynamic measure on flutter performance of the open-section girder was also checked, and the optimal control scheme to improve the aerodynamic performance of open-section girder was finally achieved.</p>
