Abstract

This study analyzes the extent to which Mexican ethnicity explains whatever differences may exist in the support Anglos (white non-Latinos) and Mexicans express for two core values patriotism and economic individualism. Citizens define a good American as one who is patriotic and defends the nation against its critics. Patriotisms continued centrality to national political life was most recently evidenced in 1992 in the efforts of a moribund Bush campaign to resurrect itself by impugning Governor Clintons patriotism.
