Abstract

The role of consultant midwife has been introduced at a time of extensive change within the NHS. These changes could affect the complex balance of power within the professions of midwifery and obstetrics. The power positions of the two professions appear to be levelling, but at the same time midwifery has been made more hierarchical by the implementation of the post of consultant midwife. The role of the consultant midwife has the potential to impact on the relationships within the maternity services, e.g. between midwifery colleagues, obstetric colleagues, educationalists and managers. The implementation of the post could influence genuine equity between the professions as opposed to the current multiprofessional teams who work under an obstetric-led agenda.
