Abstract
1. For its possible corroborative value, I >ill state that I have been collecting for more than twenty-five years examples of the uses of will here discussed, and my main conclusions were reached before the appearance in 1926 of the Oxford English Dictiona7 y's (OED) section containing the verb will; and before Part IV of Jespersen's Grammar appeared in 1931. The brief mention of the category in Websters New International Dictionary was first made in the Second Edition, 1934. See below in division II of this article. Examples that I first found in the Oxford are labeled OED followed by the definition number s. v. will} vb.l; but several of these examples are differently explained there. 2. Quoted from J. Emst Wulfing, Die Syntax in den Werken Alfreds des Grossen, Zzueiter Teil, Bonn, lgol (referred to briefly as W 2). 3. I follow Bosworth-Toller's Anglo-Saxon l}ictionary in reading an for b ( s. v. gelice} adv.); but dr may be right.
