Abstract

In this chapter, the author wants to move scholarly attention from the 'original text' to the individual manuscripts and their use and transmission. Trying to reconstruct the Vorlage of the Septuagint requires the use of the MT, a fact that constitutes a sort of circular reasoning. Yet the Masoretic Text (MT) and the Vorlage are just manuscripts that testify to the pluriformity of the Jewish Scriptures. The author addresses more specifically some of the methodological problems of the focus on the use of the Greek Jewish Scriptures (GJS) for textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible (HB) as well as challenge the focus on the reconstruction of the original text for the GJS. He examines some of issues related to the use of the GJS for the reconstruction of the HB before turning my attention to the quest to reconstruct the Original Greek (OG). Keywords: circular reasoning; Greek Jewish Scriptures (GJS); Hebrew Bible (HB); Masoretic Text (MT); Original Greek (OG).; Septuagint; Vorlage
