Abstract
This month's question concerns pipeline corrosion in distribution systems. The answer first discusses how pipeline corrosion occurs and then describes how to identify the cause. The article provides a galvanic series of selected metals and alloys (in seawater) and offers a listing of several factors that influence pipe corrosion. The article discusses coatings, encasement in polyethylene, and cathodic protection as means of controlling corrosion. A list of resources are provided.
