Abstract

Distribution networks will play a key role in the decarbonisation of electricity generation through an increased connection of distributed renewable generation sources. Utilising this generation and flexibility from other third-party assets together with smart solutions will help manage constraints on both distribution and transmission networks, thereby deferring conventional investments, achieving net-zero emissions and realising the decarbonisation of heat and transport. SP Energy Networks (SPEN) owns and operates transmission and distribution networks in central and southern Scotland, and a distribution network in the northwest of England and North Wales. This study describes SPEN's whole system planning approach to reactive power management along with the associated challenges.
