Abstract

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION officials in Geneva, Switzerland, already are planning the next seven World Days. This year's World No-Tobacco Day was May 31 (JAMA. 1990;263:1056). It had the theme Growing Up Without Tobacco, and sought to emphasize the dangers of tobacco use for young people. World No-Tobacco Days began in 1988 (JAMA. 1989;261:2938, 1989; 261:1861-1862, and 1989;261:13). World Organization, which is an autonomous unit within the United Nations system, uses these occasions to call on member nations to urge tobacco users to abstain for at least a day and perhaps to quit for good.
