Abstract

THE LAST DAY of this month has been designated "World No-Tobacco Day." This is the fourth year in a row that the occasion has been designated by the World Health Organization, an autonomous unit within the United Nations system with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The theme for the May 31 observance this year is "Public Places and Transport—Better Be Tobacco-Free." Hiroshi Nakajima, MD, PhD, director-general of the World Health Organization, suggests that, "besides displaying politeness and normal consideration for others, refraining from smoking in public places and on public transport introduces a measure of prudence for hardened smokers, the real nicotine addicts, in that they stop for a short time.
