Abstract

In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated a document - the model list of medicines that should be available to people - that is extremely noteworthy for preventive dentistry. This list exists in two versions: one for children and one for adults. Fluoride for caries prevention was recently included in both lists. Of great interest is the literature review that was also published in this context, on the basis of which the WHO assessment of fluoride was implemented. It confirms the high value of fluoride toothpaste and states, among other things, that brushing teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste is an effective means of preventing dental caries in infants and children. The recommended fluoride concentration in toothpaste is stated to be between 1000 and 1500 ppm for all age groups. Fluoride toothpaste is effective, safe, inexpensive and the most rational form of fluoride use.
