Abstract
A new high-speed milling scheme for machining complex revolutionary spiral curved surfaces by using the whirlwind milling technique is presented. The fundamental relationship equations of this milling technique are discussed based on 5-axis CNC specialized rotary-table horizontal milling machines. And the main parameters in generating tool paths are analyzed carefully. With this new method, a wider range of cutting width is available on its cutter tool edge, and the resulting surface finish has a smaller scallop height compared to traditional milling processes. Thus, developing the tool path in terms of constant scallop height strategy, the numbers of passes needed to achieve the same surface finish will be reduced and the total length of tool path will be shortened. The new technique shows that it can save the cutting time and cost exceedingly, and raise the labor productivity in manufacturing process.
