Abstract

Several years ago, I was invited to be part of a panel of queer writers of color in San Francisco. A fun discussion, I thought, and I was to represent the Asian food groups. At one point someone from the friendly audience asked me if I ever felt torn between writing as a gay person or an Asian person; the questioner himself was a gay Asian man, a respected activist in the local community. Yes, I said, it can be a challenge to bring in all the elements of myself and to address both the racial and gendered assumptions and ignorance that an audience might have, in addition to whatever narrative I hoped to construct in a limited writing space.
