Abstract

When was the last time you heard students asking for more study time? It can, and does, happen. A few years ago our district had a single three-week Health Unit. It was taught to ninth graders as part of their required Physical Education course. Students and staff began to tell us that they needed more health information. Almost simultaneously parents began to ask for information about other health-related topics. From these grass roots, an educational imperative was created in our district: add a comprehensive health education program to the curriculum. As any administrator will tell you, however, wanting something and getting it are not necessarily the same. We were able to take this spark of interest in health education and fan it into a flame. As Goethe advised, we seized the moment.
