Abstract
Although Somalia still represents a potential minefield of intraand inter-clan conflicts, locally-driven economic, social and political processes have emerged and flourished since UNOSOM's departure. Moved by economic self-interest, war weariness, and a re-emergence of traditional authorities at the expense of the militia leaders, the imperatives for peace inherent in some of these indigenous processes hold great promise for the future of the Somali people, if not for the future of a Somali state.
