Abstract
This is a discussion of the profile features which govern the guidance of a wheelset, both on straight track and on curves. Starting from the choice of a new profile, the paper explores the effects of wear on both the conicity and the safety against derailment by flange climbing. Safety against derailment is then discussed further in relation to the discrete irregularities in rail profile that occur at switches and crossings.
