Gopen is Director of Writing Programs and Associate Professor of English at Duke University. He holds both a Ph.D. and a law degree (J.D.) from Harvard University. He is the author of Writing from a Legal Perspective (West Publishing, 1981), as well as a book on the 15th century Scots poet Robert Henryson. His published articles all deal with rhetorical analysis and range in topic from Shakespeare's poetry to the prose of the Uniform Commercial Code. He is a consultant to major businesses, law firms, and governmental agencies throughout the country.David A. SmithDavid A. Smith received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1963 and is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Duke University. He edited the Computer Corner of this journal from 1986 through 1988, and he chairs the MAA Committee on Computers in Mathematics Education. His current area of research is numerical analysis; he has also published articles on algebra, combinatorial theory, mathematical psychology, and mathematics education.
