Abstract

E-commerce is global activity that, worldwide, exceeds trillions of U.S. dollars in sales annually. We order goods online and have them delivered to our home or place of business. The packages that our orders arrive in have several purposes: to protect the contents of the boxes and improve storage capabilities as well as to aid in delivery logistics with well-defined dimensions. As customers, we are most interested in the contents of the package and typically don’t give much thought to the packaging itself. While breaking down the boxes for recycling, I am sometimes amazed at the complexities of the packaging. The packaging material is fabricated in flat, 2D sheets of cardboard or heavy stock but then cut in a variety of ways so that, with just a few folds, a sturdy 3D package of defined volume is created. Insightful, 3D thinking and engineering are necessary for successful packaging designs.
