Abstract

Remember those teachers at school who could not get ahold of the class: everyone was chatting, doing whatever, but definitely not learning. And then there were those teachers to whom everyone almost effortlessly paid attention. These teachers excelled by conveying the subject-matter in an engaging and comprehensible manner, by adequately assessing students’ thinking during learning and adaptively responding to the students’ learning needs. Effective teachers show superior performance with regard to core-practices of teaching (Forzani 2014), such as classroom management (Voss et al. 2011; Kunter et al. 2013; Wang et al. 1993), provision of instructional explanations (Leinhardt 1989), and formative assessment (Ruiz-Primo and Furtak 2007).
