Abstract

Naval Engineers JournalVolume 86, Issue 5 p. 60-64 What Happened to Cyclops, Nereus, and Proteus—The Langley's Missing Sisters? RADM. GEORGE van DEURS, RADM. GEORGE van DEURS USN (RET) born in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1920. He did three years engineering duty at sea and began his flying career in 1923. A Naval Aviator until his retirement in 1951, his prior duty assignments included 10 years of flight test work and three years in the USS Jason. During World War II he served ashore in the Solomons, commanded an Aircraft Carrier, and at its conclusion was a Task Force Chief of Staff. Since retirement he has written many magazine articles and his history of early Naval Aviation, “Wings for the Fleet” was published by the Naval Institute.
