Abstract

The related subjects of abortion and human embryo experimentation raise scientific and ethical issues, and give rise to strongly held views. On the one hand, there are clinical and scientific arguments for allowing the manipulation and culture of human embryos. Furthermore, many people are in favour, at least in certain circumstances, of abortion. In particular, the freedom to choose abortion is an important issue in women's rights. On the other hand, there is considerable resistance to the idea of destroying, or experimenting on, what may be a person—albeit an immature one.
