Abstract

No doubt President Bush's infamous State of the Union Address in January 2002 that condemned North Korea as part of the axis of evil along with Iran and Iraq has heightened tension in the Korean peninsula. With the anti-terrorism campaign in full swing, the North Korean nuclear crisis and the threat of war in the Korean peninsula received high profile media coverage in the U.S. American viewers have been bombarded with daily reports on the North Korean nuclear crisis and thus perceive North Korea as one of the most dangerous threats to world peace. More importantly, the American media's demonic portrayal of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il as a fanatical, insane, evil, and mad dog character inflamed rhetoric and justifies a unilateral preemptive strike against North Korea.
