Abstract
A review of the milestones of recreational scuba diving within Western Australia (WA) is presented. To quantify growth, Western Australian telephone directories were searched for recreational dive industry advertisements placed between 1969 and 2005 inclusive. The age of dive businesses operating in WA is compared with concurrent population growth within WA over the last three decades, for north, south and central coastal regions. Recreational dive businesses in south WA are surviving the recent industry downturn relatively well, compared to their colleagues in Perth and further north.
