Abstract

Obesity is a complex, chronic disease impacting millions of individuals in the United States. Advances in surgical management of obesity as an effective weight loss strategy have led to an increase in the number of obese individuals pursuing bariatric surgery. Although existing literature describes nutritional deficiency as a common complication after bariatric surgery, Wernicke encephalopathy is often overlooked, partly due to its historical association with alcohol misuse disorder. Nurse practitioners in all settings should have a high clinical suspicion for Wernicke encephalopathy in at-risk patients presenting with neurologic deficits.
