Abstract

AbstractThe late medieval origins of the small-scale ceramic industry and its dependence upon the trade of the Bristol region are examined from archaeological and documentary evidence. This preliminary survey provides the necessary background for understanding in the post-medieval period the gradual growth of small kilns serving local markets while an examination of the port books shows that South Wales was still dependent on the Bristol Channel trade. Chester played a similar role in North Wales. The archaeological survey is concentrated on the coarse wares produced along the South Wales coast, revealed from the discovery of kilns and front the accumulation of excavated material.
