Abstract

Wellhausen's discussion of the historical place of P is outlined in: (1) the place of worship; (2) the sacrifice; (3) the sacred feasts; (4) the priests and the Levites; (5) the endowment of the clergy. As the New Year and the Day of Atonement have no connection with nature and agriculture, they are totally absent from the Book of the Covenant and Deuteronomic Code. Wellhausen's claims that the burning of incense was not instituted until the Second Temple period, and that it was this innovation that brought about the introduction of the altar of gold (Exod 30:1-10) is unfounded as well. The five pillars of Wellhausen's construction do not stand on solid ground and can no longer be maintained. The sacral character of P is no literary image of the priestly rule of the Second Temple days, as Wellhausen believed.Keywords: Deuteronomic code; Israelite tradition; Josiah; Wellhausen's literary criticism
