Abstract

Prescriptions about circumcision (Gen 17); Sabbath observance (Exod 16; 31:12-17; 35:1-3; Num 15:32-36); forbidden foods (Lev 11); purity, impurity, and menstrual taboos (Lev 12-15); the sanctity of the Land and the laws thereto attached such as the years of release and the Jubilee (Lev 25), the New Year (Lev 23:23-25; Num 29:1-6), the Day of Atonement (Lev 16, 23:26-32) and so forth all these laws come to the fore in the priestly stratum of the Pentateuch, and in other strata such as the Book of the Covenant (Exod 21-23) and the Deuteronomic Code (Deut 12-26). The notion, which Wellhausen ascribed to Jesus as the antithesis of Judaism, that true monotheism is not to be satisfied with stipulated services, it demands the whole man is an authentically Jewish view. Keywords: Jewish; Pharisaic Judaism; Prolegomena
