Abstract
Midwives find themselves in a period of transition as both professionals and employees. A series of consultations undertaken by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the first wave of developments driven by Agenda for Change (2002) ( www.doh.gov.uk/agendaforchange ) are likely to produce simultaneous changes in professional regulation and employment. This promises to be an exciting but uncertain time for individual midwives, and one in which they may increasingly seek the guidance of unions, possibly through the pages of a website such as that of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM):
