Abstract
Although many transportation bookings can be made online these days, the ferry booking system has remained very much the same in most parts of the world, relying on the traditional manual ticketing system. This paper presents the design and development of an online ferry booking system that would allow both the user and the operator to benefit in terms of cost and time savings. Additionally, an easily accessible online system provide ease of access to real-time information. The proposed system requirements were derived from literature as well as a survey of technical and non-technical ferry users. The system incorporates location tracking for passengers and relevant parties to better prepare for their journey. Passenger load balancing is incorporated as an integral component in the seat allocation, targeting safer passage and fuel economy for the operators. From the user acceptance testing conducted, the results were encouraging for such a system to be deployed.
