Abstract
A micro-controller-based test rig for evaluating the wear performance of wood journal bearings has been designed and built. Sal wood journal bearings were manufactured and tested on the above test rig. It was found that bearings extracted along Tangential orientation of wood have better wear resistance than those from other orientations. The wear rate was non-linear with sliding distance, indicating the presence of different phases in wear. A multi-phasal wear mechanism is hypothesised.
