Abstract

A detailed and thoughtful account of small-group talk which highlights the difficulties of assessing each person's contribution. Paul Skelton shows how small-group talk is heavily dependent on the personality, behaviour, attitudes, responses and language skills of each group member and his research leads him to conclude that teachers ought to give opportunities for assessment in a variety of group situations-and even then, our judgements should only be temporary and provisional.
