Abstract
Ratification of the European Chartes of Regional or Minority Languages constitutes important support for minority languages which have been traditionally spoken by citizens in Poland since over 100 years. The Chartes has introduced new term regional language and therefore new approach to the matter of Polish dialects and language minorities are required. According to the reports of the Committee of Experts CE, application of the Chartes shows weakness in the Polish language policy — Poland has focused on the symbolic role of national language and has discounted sociolinguistic situation. Awareness towards language minorities in the Polish society are still low.
