Abstract

The article shows that the main methods of word formation in the British press are word combinations, telescoping, compounding, affixation, abbreviation, contraction, expansion of the meaning of a word, and conversion. The author analyzed 159 neologisms of the British press from 2019-2023. It was determined that the neologisms of the British press cover all spheres of human life: everyday life, work, architecture, ecology, leisure, entertainment, and the special role of СOVID-19 in the word formation of neologisms of the British press, which is associated with the active use of ZOOM, as well as life and work online, was noted. . It has been established that socially significant events influence the appearance of new words. It was determined that, from a structural point of view, a large number of new word combinations were formed according to the typical adjective plus noun model. The article shows that word combinations are formed by metaphorical and metonymic transfers of meaning. It was determined that the aging of the nation and the elderly are given a significant place in the phrases. It has been proven that word combinations have covered all spheres of human existence and are the main trend of word formation in the British press of 2019-2023. It has been established that another important direction of word formation is telescoping, which covers ecology, nutrition, architecture and everyday life. It is justified that word formations are used in trade, everyday life and the information sphere. It is shown that the abbreviation is used in social and political life, nutrition, financial sphere, information activities. The author noted that among the abbreviations there are acronyms. It is noted that among all the variety of neologisms of the British press, conversion is found. It is noted that affixation is also used in neologisms and the suffix ism, ing is used. Suffixation predominates in modern word formation, and prefixation is less common in the British press.
