Abstract

Analytical results are derived for the number of wavelengths in WDM bus networks without wavelength conversion, considering a wide variety of scenarios. These involve single or multiple communities of interest, each of which may be either in a hub or mesh traffic configuration. Broadcast busses, wavelength re-use busses and partial wavelength re-use busses are considered. The number of wavelengths required by a mesh community is roughly proportional to the square of the number of nodes whereas the number for a hub community rises linearly with the number of nodes. Passive busses use approximately twice as many wavelengths as re-use bus networks. It is shown that partial wavelength re-use is more beneficial with mesh rather than hub traffic interconnection patterns.
