Abstract

A flexible-armed, rigid-foil (or "flexible fin") propeller was investigated as a wave propulsion device. Tests were done in head seas on a yacht model fitted with this propeller. The propeller reduced the peak heave and pitch motions of the model and contributed to forward thrust. Maximum thrust was obtained in waves with a length of 1.5 to 2.0 times the length of the vessel.
