His work on the social and political bases of Greens parties derives from his PhD thesis on national identity and the Australian left, and from a long-time involvement and interest in left and green politics. From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of one of the locality-based parties that were precursors to the Australian Greens, he has been a frequent contributor to Green Left Weekly since 1991, and he is currently active in the National Tertiary Education Union and the Socialist Alliance.
